Hopewell Township Police Department in New Jersey fired two officers, Sergeant Mandy Grey and Sara Erwin, for comments they made on Twitter about the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement. Former Officer Erwin referred to BLM as terrorists, and Grey reacted/responded to the Tweet. According to nj.com, both officers have more than twenty years of experience, and are, in the words of their lawyer, “exemplary and decorated officers with absolutely disciplinary history.”
In June 2020, Erwin wrote on Twitter, “Last night as I left for work I had my two kids crying for me not to go to work. I don’t think I’ve ever felt the way I did last night. And then I watched people I know and others I care about going into harms way. I love my police family like my own. So when you share posts and things on Facebook I’d really appreciate if you’d THINK before doing so. I’ve seen so many black lives matter [sic] hashtags in these posts. Just to let you know – they are terrorists. They hate me. They hate my uniform. They don’t care if I die.”
This was enough to warrant disciplinary action from Hopewell Township. Shortly after the message was posted, Police Chief Lance Maloney actually apologized, on behalf of the police department for the Tweet.
This is one of the many instances when somebody who speaks his/her mind on social media ends up losing their job. In 2018, Disney fired Director James Gunn (director of Guardians of the Galaxy) for offensive Tweets he made years prior. A UTC offensive line football coach, Chris Malone, who allegedly worked as such for over twenty years, was fired for having posted a Tweet that was interpreted as offensive.
In what world is it acceptable to lose a long-lasting career, with no previous record of wrong-doing or poor behavior in the workplace, just because of an opinion or comment that is said respectfully? Not only are Grey and Erwin within their right to express whatever opinion they want, but as it turns out, Erwin has an actual case for her comments. BLM has a history of violence, looting, vandalism, and disturbing the public peace.
In April 2021, Sky News Australia reported that more than sixty BLM protestors were arrested by police in Minnesota for having engaged in illegal behavior. Compare this to CNN airing on a live television panel that read, “fiery but mostly peaceful protest,” in regards to yet another BLM riot. That’s right! An Australian news source was more honest about the activities and behavior of BLM than our own national media outlets. Do you still believe the American MSM doesn’t have an agenda yet?
The only reason these officers Grey and Erwin were fired is because the United States is being pressured into accepting this behavior from rioters. As far as our employers are concerned, if you speak out against this thuggery, if you “call it like it is,” you will be cancelled, fired, and so forth. This is not conducive to forming a healthy society. Has the government stepped in to protect our First Amendment right to “freedom of speech”? Has the federal government used their authority to override the authority of the local police departments to protect Mandy Grey’s and Sara Erwin’s jobs? Do you think the current government cares about protecting your right to speak freely?
At what point do we finally say, “Enough is enough!”?
