The Geopolitical Threat of Canada’s Century Initiative

The Century Initiative is a Canadian Thing Tank whose goal is to increase Canada’s population to 100 million people by 2100. As part of their reason, they cite Canadian influence on the world stage as a major reason why Canada must have 100 million people by 2100. (1) The Century Initiative’s own polling shows that the popularity of immigration in Canada has continued to drop but the Century Initiative continues with this policy regardless. (2)

Canada’s population has significantly increased over the past few years. (3) According to the Century Initiative, 96% of the population growth is due to immigration. (2)

So even though immigration is becoming more and more unpopular their remains the question of why Canada is continuing to pursue this policy. While there are concerns about economic growth, I think the main reason is more nefarious. A more populus Canada could disrupt the geopolitical balance of power on the North American continent, away from America and towards Canada. Under Canada’s current population Canada has no hope to resist a potential American invasion, however if Canada’s population grows to 100 million people and America’s population remains at its current rate their will be a 1:3 ration of Canadians to Americans, the same population ratio of Ukrainians to Russians. This would make it very hard for America to exercise hard power over our Norther neighbor and make a potential Canadian-Mexican coalition able to project hard power into America, potentially resulting in an invasion of America which would mark the end of American sovereignty.

Canada is the world’s fourth largest producer of gold, at 194.5 tons in 2022. (4) The world’s tenth largest producer of iron ore at 58 million metric tons in 2022. (5) The world’s second largest producer of Uranium at 7,351 tons in 2022. (6) The world’s fifth largest cobalt producer at 3,900 metric tons in 2022. (7) And Canada is has the world’s fourth largest fresh water reserves at 2,902 cubic kilometers of freshwater. (8) All of these resources except for freshwater, Canada has more of than America. Due to Canada’s low population much of these resources are exported to America to feed American industry, however, if Canada’s population were to grow to 100 million people than less of these resources would be available for export to America.

Due to national security and resource concerns it should be obvious that immigration fueled population growth in Canada is not in American interests. New Frontiers have critiqued American intervention in Asia, and Europe because American interests do not lie in these parts of the world. However, it should be abundantly clear that America does have key interests in out norther neighbor, interests that could be existential for the wellbeing and survival of America.

In order to deal with this threat of rising Canadian power, America must issue an ultimate to Canada to have a complete moratorium on immigration for twenty five years, afterwards any future Candain immigration policy must be approved by America, if no agreement can be found the moratorium shall be extended until an agreement is found. If Canada fails to submit to these demands America should launch a trade embargo. If this fails to deter Canada than America shall impose a sea and air blockade of Canadian ports and airports and prevent immigration fueled Canadian population growth using force.
